Tapos na ang Eleksyon - Move On!

Angelina Jolie Had A Double Mastectomy

My children can see my small scars and that’s it. Everything else is just Mommy, the same as she always was.  ~ Angelina Jolie

I was shocked when I heard from the news that Angelina Jolie underwent a double mastectomy. It even shows pictures of what this procedure would have been. And I was – ano’ng nangyari???

From an op-ed article in the New York Times, I’ve noted:

I have always told them (her kids)  not to worry, but the truth is I carry a “faulty” gene.

I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer. It is reassuring that they see nothing that makes them uncomfortable.

They can see my small scars and that’s it. Everything else is just Mommy, the same as she always was.

And they know that I love them and will do anything to be with them as long as I can.

On a personal note, I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.

My heart is warmed by her bravery!

As a mom, I believed that Jolie is extremely brave for making a huge decision such as this.
She could spare herself from the agonies of painful procedures, scars and series of surgeries. Instead, she courageously endures the pain and face her situation in order to be there for her children in the future.

In my most humble opinion, all her actions and reasons for coming up into that decision boils down into one reality that she is – a mother! An extremely selfless woman and a very much of a mommy!

What she did defines  what mothers would willingly do for the sake of her children and family.

To Angelina and to everyone who’s on the same plight and are fighting for their health, life and family – my prayers are with you! Kudus!

How did Strawberry Get its Name?

Last weekend, my youngest son Lemon asked –

“ Mommy, bakit strawberry ang tawag sa strawberry?”

It took me a minute before I could reply. I usually have witty answers to his never-ending questions about everything that tickles his curiosity.

But this one is really mind-boggling! It would be easier sana if he’d asked me about blueberry for I could instantly say that the name is due to its color! Haha

For how did strawberry gets its name??? I humbly admit to my little one that I don’t have any idea as to its origin. Instead I promised to get back to him once I have the answer.

So there goes my search for this cutie strawberry. I never expected a lot of amazing facts about this fruit – err plant!

Belonging to genus fragraria, that makes it a close relative of rose plant. While blueberry has a seed inside it, strawberry seems having its seeds on the outside.

Now, remember the parts of a plant we studied on our science class? The part of the strawberry that we eat which we all know as fruit is actually the “stamen”. Stamen is the part that holds the ovaries. On the other hand, the outside seeds that we visibly see is in fact the plant’s ovaries! Ready? This means that the seed is actually the fruit which has a separate seed inside it! (anu raw?) Whew! What a berry complicated anatomy!

Going back to our question, there is no concrete written facts as to how it gets its name. Some believed that farmers have this practice of spreading a layer of grass straws around each plant in order to grow and protect strawberry plant against climate.

That’s it! Hope it satisfies my Lemon’s curiosity and I hope I make sense! haha
